St. David's HealthCare
As IRB Coordinator, Valerie Nelson is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of St. David’s HealthCare Institutional Review Board (SDH IRB). This includes policy development, conducting board meetings, processing submissions, ensuring regulatory compliance, and educating researchers. She is also on the team of St. David’s HealthCare Office of Research.
Valerie has worked in the industry since 2005, when she began her career at a global CRO, and has worked at two commercial IRBs in subsequent years. In her previous IRB positions, she held many roles, but mostly that of IRB Coordinator. She has experience in operations, policy development, management and laying the groundwork for oversight of international research. Valerie currently holds credentials as a Certified IRB Professional (CIP) from Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) and as a Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP) from The Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA). She greatly values developing personal relationships with research staff and feels that open communication and reciprocal discourse are key to ensuring compliance with regulations and augments protection of the rights and welfare of research subjects.
Before working in research, Valerie studied History and French at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. She completed graduate school at Texas State University in San Marcos, where she received her Master’s degree in History.
